Leading Research Scientist, Geodesy and Remote Sensing Department
GFZ - German Research Centre for Geosciences
Potsdam, Germany
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx. 1100 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the “System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science organization.
For Department 1 “Geodesy and Remote Sensing“, Section 1.1 „GPS/Galileo Earth Observation" invites applications for a Leading Research Scientist (f/m).
Section 1.1 operates one of the Analysis Centers of the International GNSS Service (IGS). The geodetic products of the IGS like, e.g., satellite orbits and positions of the GNSS stations are used worldwide in numerous applications in many societal areas. The challenges in the future development of the IGS are mainly the inclusion of new satellite navigation systems as the Chinese Beidou and the European Galileo system, real-time data processing and reprocessing activities for geophysical applications. The basis for the activities of the IGS Analysis Center at GFZ is a powerful geodetic analysis software, where presently the software package EPOS (Earth Parameter and Orbit Determination Software) is deployed.
The candidate (f/m) shall coordinate all scientific and operational activities of the IGS Analysis Center and is responsible for the geodetic data analysis.
Tasks:
Leadership in all scientific and operational activities of the IGS Analysis Center as well as in the development of the geodetic GNSS software;
Representation of the IGS Analysis Center within the IGS and other international bodies, at scientific conferences and workshops;
Presentation and publication of the results on a high international level;
Development and implementation of new GNSS analysis algorithms including automated data processing;
Development of strategic concepts for a successful operation of the IGS Analysis Center;
Acquirement of third-party funds for precise geodetic data analysis and for geophysical application of GNSS data.
Qualifications:
PhD in geodesy, geosciences, mathematics or physics;
Long-standing experience in GNSS software development and data processing, and deep knowledge of the underlying models;
Very good programming skills in FORTRAN or C/C++, as well as in Perl under Unix/Linux;
Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international team and to lead it;
Excellent scientific abilities proven by a high publication record;
Experience in acquirement of third-party funds;
Very good command of English (in writing and oral).
