Position Announcement
3 Years post-doctoral position (100%) within the DFG research unit MADSoil
We offer a 3-year post-doctoral position (100%) at the Chair of Hydrogeology of the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Germany (www.uni-jena.de / www.hydrogeology.uni-jena.de) within the DFG-funded research unit MADSoil. The announced position includes a salary according to TV-L E13, corresponding to the German TV-L system (Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst der Länder). The starting date is October 1st 2015.
Description:
Formation and stability of soil micro-aggregates depend on the forces acting between the building units. While the interaction forces are the result of the superposition of short-range and long-range forces, the contact surface is a function of the size, shape, roughness and larger-scale irregularities. By employing atomic force microscopy (AFM), we will explore the role of topography, adhesion, elasticity and hardness for the formation of soil micro-aggregates and their stability against external stress. Special consideration will be put on the role of extracellular polymeric substances as glueing agent. The objectives are to identify the surface properties which control the stability of aggregates, to explain formation and stability of aggregates by analyzing interaction forces and contacting surface topography, and to link these results to the chemical information obtained by, e.g., NanoSIMS and XPS in other MadSoil projects.
This position gives an opportunity to combine AFM with other cutting edge technologies within an interdisciplinary research team focusing on the (trans-)formation, fate and transport of sub-micron-sized aggregates in the pedosphere and hydrogeosphere.
Requirements:
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree and Doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, microbiology, geosciences, mineralogy, environmental sciences or related science. Advanced experience in the application of atomic force microscopy and publication in peer reviewed journals as first author are mandatory. Additional experience in other microscopic techniques like Raman microscopy, scanning and/or transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM) are highly welcome. Experience with AFM-tip modification or advanced image analysis will be highly beneficial. The candidate should be highly motivated, team-minded, and keen to work with advanced analytical techniques.
Applications:
A single pdf-file including a letter of motivation, a CV, publication list, the contact data of 2 referees, and a statement of research interests should be sent by email indicating [AFM-MadSoil] in the subject line to hydrogeologie@uni-jena.de until August 7th 2015. Evaluation of the applications will start soon after the deadline. For questions concerning your application feel free to contact kai.tosche@uni-jena.de.
