Scientist
Environmental Physics
Lincoln I Vacancy 11490
The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research develops scientific knowledge and practical technologies for the agricultural industry that minimise the impacts of farming systems on the environment while optimising production, quality and economic performance.
We seek an experienced scientist who will work with other members of the Sustainable Production Portfolio and our collaborators to improve our understanding of the soil physical environment and its impacts on the processes that affect soil water storage, transport and use; nutrient transformations and losses; and crop production. This will include the quantification of water, gas and solute movement between the soil, atmosphere and vadose zones and understanding how soil physical characteristics and conditions influence these processes and their consequences for plant growth. The knowledge gained will be used to improve soil and crop management practices and farm system models and to inform policy that will help to sustain or increase agricultural productivity and profitability while reducing impacts on water quality and greenhouse gas emissions.
This permanent, full-time position is an outstanding opportunity for a scientist with a background in soil or environmental science and a strong interest in applied or systems research. A PhD or a postgraduate degree combined with relevant practical experience will be required.
