Organisation
Agroscope is an innovative research institute for agriculture and nutrition
with research stations at a number of sites around Switzerland. Agroscope
conducts research to benefit environmentally friendly, competitive
agriculture. We consider ecology, economy and agricultural technology in an
integrated research approach. Our research work aims at providing a
scientific basis for decision support for farmers, government and society.
The Climate and Air Pollution Group at Agroscope offers a PhD position in
the field of trace gas exchange and nitrogen cycling measurements.
Tasks
The PhD work will be part of the SNF project 'NiceGras' (Nitrogen cycling
and emissions of Grazing systems).
The research work focusses on measurements of the N2O and NH3 emission of
grazed pastures in relation to the nitrogen cycling under different feeding
regimes. The PhD student will perform flux measurements with the eddy
covariance and chamber methods in combination with state-of-the-art trace
gas analysers (quantum cascade laser spectroscopy, chemiluminescence
detector, differential optical UV absorption spectrometry). The candidate
will optimise the methodological design and instrumental operation for the
specific application. The candidate will be taught to analyse the
measurement data and interpret the results in the context of agricultural
management practices and their impact on the environment (greenhouse gas
budget and air pollution impacts).
Position Requirements and What We Offer
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with a master degree in natural
sciences (e.g. Environmental Science, Physics, Meteorology, Geography), with
an interest in experimental and interdisciplinary research on environmental
issues of agro-ecosystems. Knowledge in micrometeorology or experience with
trace gas measurements are highly desirable. Experience with programming,
preferably with 'R' or 'LabView' are appreciated. Good knowledge of spoken
and written English in addition to German or French is required.
The successful candidate will benefit from flexible working hours and good
employee benefits.
