Position Name: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SOIL PHYSICS

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Plant and Soil Science, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas seeks candidates for a faculty position in soil physics at the assistant professor level. This will be a nine-month, tenure-eligible position, with the possibility of summer salary support through teaching and/or research. Duties will include teaching courses in soils and soil-water relations, advising undergraduate and graduate students and working with government and industry clientele. Candidates are expected to establish an outstanding teaching and grant-supported research program in basic and applied studies on water and gas exchange in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, as well as complement and broaden the current Plant and Soil Science Department’s capabilities. Willingness to collaborate with other soil scientists, ecophysiologists dealing with crops, horticulture, forages, and turf, climatologists, geoscientists, landscape architects, and civil and environmental engineers at Texas Tech, Texas A&M AgriLife, USDA-ARS, and USDA-NRCS is necessary. The successful applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; provide service to the department, college, university and community; establish a research program with the capacity to generate external funding; and be active in professional societies.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have an earned Ph.D. in soil physics, environmental soil hydrology, or related field. Training and experience are desirable in soil and plant water relations, vadose zone hydrology, irrigation technology, soil management, environmental physics, transport processes, simulation modeling, spatial variability, instrumentation, and climatology. Demonstrated strength in publication consistent with entry-level assistant professor rank in soil and environmental physics is expected. Applicants must have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate and teach in English. Aptitudes for working with industry and government agencies as well as conducting and publishing high quality interdisciplinary scientific research are also expected. Must be authorized for employment in the United States.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Plant and Soil Science is a comprehensive academic unit conducting research and offering coursework and programs in several areas of plant and soil sciences. We have 26 full-time faculty members and a student body consisting of approximately 130 undergraduate and 120 graduate students. B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. level degrees are offered in Plant and Soil Science. Additionally, we offer distance education courses and four certificate programs. The department is research intensive while fostering strong teaching expectations and commitments. Students in the department are educated to meet the challenge of using soil, water and plant resources for sustainable production and environmental quality.

THE COLLEGE: The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) is a leading college at Texas Tech University with six academic departments: Agriculture and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resources Management, and Plant and Soil Science, as well as multiple research centers and institutes. The CASNR Water Center coordinates faculty with water-related expertise. For the most recent academic year, the college had 80 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 1,437 undergraduates, 210 M.S. students, and 138 Ph.D. students. CASNR has an annual operating budget of more than $10M and generates approximately $15M annually in research funding.
