RESEARCH SCIENTIST 2: This position will be responsible for serving as a technical expert for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) on impaired waters issues in agricultural landscapes.
The position is responsible for coordinating complex research and demonstration projects on impaired waters in agricultural landscapes. Responsibilities include: coordinating with MDA staff to identify research priorities, develop requests for proposals, select researchers and institutions, work with researchers on projects, author and co-author technical research papers in partnership with various institutions, and disseminate research outcomes to stakeholders. The incumbent will represent the MDA working with stakeholders to select appropriate agricultural conservation practices including Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Comprehensive Watershed Management Plans.
The incumbent is also responsible for providing agricultural technical assistance in support of the impaired water process including reviews of: proposed 303(d) listings of impaired waters; watershed characterization reports; watershed protection and restoration strategy reports; Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) assessments; and comprehensive watershed management plans

SELECTED MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master's Degree or higher in Water Resources Science, Hydrology, Soil Science, Agronomy or a closely related field; Three years of experience working on soil fertility issues with farmers, the ag industry or affiliated research; Experience with evaluating water quality monitoring data, vadose zone and surface water instrumentation; Demonstrated advanced understanding of nutrient and pesticide Best Management Practices (BMPs) and cropping systems common to Minnesota; Specialized knowledge in understanding the linkage between nitrogen fertilizer inputs, crop response, and environmental fate and transport to groundwater; Specialized knowledge regarding the TMDL process including water quality standards, methods, and protocols used in the impaired waters process; knowledge of sediment, nutrient, pesticide, and bacteria fate and transport mechanisms at multiple scales; Excellent writing skills sufficient to prepare research reports for publication and distribution; The ability to transfer technical scientific concepts and research findings to growers, agency personnel and the general public; and Must currently possess and maintain an active/valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.
