We are looking for a senior scientist soil fertility specialist
The team Soil Physics and Land Management is searching for a senior scientist with a passion for tropical soil fertility to strengthen our work on effective nutrient management in relation to increasing food security. The position will be fulfilled in the research field: “interaction between land, water and nutrients” and more specifically on the topic “Tropical Soil Fertility”.
We ask
The candidate holds a (MSc/PhD) degree on nutrient management and soil fertility and/or tropical agronomy and is experienced in working in the tropics (preferably SSA). The candidate should have the capacity and network to place the topic and tools of soil fertility management on large international agenda’s and as such integrate the topic soil fertility management into existing (food security) programs. The candidate should have tangible acquisition experience and the capacity to contribute to the further development of Alterra’s tools and models on soil fertility. As the work focusses on the tropics the candidate should be capable of frequent traveling and if necessary stay abroad for a longer period. The candidate is sensitive to cultural differences and knows how to communicate with people with a different cultural background and has good communication skills as well to interact with clients and scientists from various disciplines. The candidate should be fluent in English speaking and (scientific) writing, additional languages skills are highly appreciated.
We offer
The position will be on a temporary basis for a period of 1 year, with a prospect of extension after successful evaluation.
Working hours between 32 and 38. In principle, the position is full-time, but an appointment for four days per week could be discussed.
Salary depends on knowledge and experience.

The team Soil Physics and Land Management contributes, through research, to the sustainable use and management of the soil. The (social) necessity of our research is larger than ever, given the climate scenario’s, land use changes, large variety of claims on land and the policy demands for emission reductions in agricultural production. The team Soil Physics and Land Management develops practical knowledge and tools for sustainable land use within the research fields of 1) Soil physical processes; 2) Soil degradation and sustainable land management; 3) Interaction between land, water and nutrients and 4) Peat soils.
