We are looking for

A post-doc researcher who will explore shifts in complex landscape systems within the multidisciplinary project ‘Smart Landscapes’. The project’s overall objective is to find out which properties of natural and used landscapes enhance or reduce the probability of occurrence of tipping points, and how this knowledge can be used to design landscapes and land use systems that promote a shift to a more desired state, or prevent a shift to an undesired state. ‘Smart Landscapes’ profits from Wageningen University’s strong tradition in studying and modelling complex environmental systems. Disciplines particularly involved in ‘ Smart Landscapes’ are geomorphology/soil science (dr. Arnaud Temme), mathematical biology, modelling (dr. George van Voorn), spatial ecology (dr. Merel Soons), hydrology/climate science (dr. Ryan Teuling) and remote sensing (dr. Lammert Kooistra). In ‘Smart Landscapes’, two 30-month postdoc positions will be advertised, with the current, first position starting about 18 months ahead of the second position.

The main task of this Post-Doc position is the development and analysis of conceptual and numerical models of landscapes, and to publish results in international journals. The candidate will design simulation studies that are grounded in the different disciplines that are part of the project and take on a coordinating role in the project team. The project is expected to open up a new research field with funding opportunities. Supported by professional staff, the candidate will also play a role in the organization of meetings and courses in the context of the project.
We ask

For this challenging position, the ideal candidate:

Must hold a PhD degree in a quantitative environmental science discipline at the time of appointment;
Is a good communicator who will be at the heart of our multidisciplinary team;
Has a strong interest in combining different scientific disciplines to develop new insights and skills;
Has experience with the development and analysis of quantitative spatial simulation methods (analytical or numerical);
Has excellent command of English;
Has experience with the acquisition of research grants;
Has published in peer-reviewed journals.

We offer

A fulltime employment (38 hours a week) as researcher within the Soil Geography and Landscape Group for 30 months. Salary range, depending on qualification and experience: € 2890 - € 4418 gross each month (based on fulltime employment). In addition, we offer a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8.3% of your annual salary.
