Job Vacancy No. 76/5/11 G
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association.
Within the TERENO Observatory in northeast Germany the Department 5 „Earth Surface Processes“, Section 5.4 „Hydrology“ invites applications for a
Postdoctoral Position (m/f).
The TERENO (Terrrestrial Environmental Observatory) initiative is an interdisciplinary and long-term research programme involving six Helmholtz Association Centers. TERENO spans an Earth observation network across Germany that extends from the North German lowlands to the Bavarian Alps. This unique large-scale project aims to catalogue the longterm ecological, social and economic impact of global change at regional level. Within this initiative the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is in charge oft he Northeastern Lowland Observatory. The here offered position will be part of this unique effort of implementing a long-term site.
The position will focus on linking of paleo-climatic proxy time series with hydrological time series in order to gain an understanding of long-term dynamics in hydrological storages and processes. Paleo-climatic proxy time series will include dendrochronological data as well as data from lake sediment cores. Local knowledge will be used in an regionalization effort, extending to regional long term dynamics in groundwater and lakes levels. Experimental investigations tob e carried out include the measurement of throughfall under different forest types with special emphasis on ist spatial and temporal variability and ist potential influence on groundwater recharge. Close cooperation with the GFZ Dendrochronology Team (Section 5.2) and with the PhD students working within the observatory is expected, as well as supporting the team`s efforts on gaining third party funding.
The candidate will furthermore contribute to the installation oft he extensive monitoring network within the observatory.
We offer an interdisciplinary, international work environment, state of the art experimental equipment and the possibility to be part of an enthusiastic team.
Tasks:
Linking paleo-climatic proxy time series with recent hydrological data
Investigation of regional dynamics of lake and groundwater levels
Contribution to the installation and maintenance oft the monitoring network
Installation oft the throughfall and stemflow plots under different forest types
Strong support in the writing of proposals in order to gain third party funding
Co-supervision of PhD students
Presentation and publication of scientific results
Qualifications:
PhD in hydrology, physics, environmental engineering, environmental sciences, forest hydrology, soil science or similar
Experimantal background, especially concerning vegetation effects on hydrology
Willingness to work in the field (field campaigns of several weeks are to be expected)
Motivation to work in a multi-disciplinary team
Good publication record
Good command of English language, German is an asset
