The Junior Research Group “SEE�URBAN�WATER� at the Institute of Applied Geosciences of Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany, is offering 4 Ph.D. positions (f/m) – 75 % from January 1, 2018 on. The positions are initially limited to three years, but can be extended to a total of five years.
Within the framework of the Junior Research Group "SEE�URBAN�WATER", the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding over a period of five years the research work of four doctoral students and one group leader in the field of social�ecological research. The doctoral positions will be filled on an interdisciplinary basis (one doctoral candidate from the engineering sciences, natural sciences, social sciences and economics). The research work of the Junior Research Group deals with the interaction of technical infrastructure systems, urban ecosystems and the urban environment in developing countries. In the Nicaraguan City of León as a case study, representative research areas are used to develop and test nature�based urban drainage and wastewater treatment infrastructures as well as to investigate their effects on ecosystem services in the city and its surroundings.

Requirements / your profile:
� Master or diploma degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, urban water management, urban/free�space planning or a similar field of study (1 position); geosciences, ecology, hydrology, geography or a similar field of study (1 position); environmental economics or a similar field of study (1 position); or social sciences (1 position).
� Willingness to undertake regular field trips and conference visits abroad (e. g. to Nicaragua about 6 weeks a year).
� Very good command of written and spoken English.
Advantageous for the application:
� Previous knowledge of ecosystem services (mapping, modelling and assessment), nature-based infrastructures (planning and design).
- Experience in fieldwork / stream ecology mapping.
� Experience in interdisciplinary cooperation and socio�ecological research.
� Spanish language skills.
� Knowledge of remote sensing and image analysis.
� Experience in international cooperation (especially with developing countries).
� Experience in scientific publishing.
Opportunity to prepare for a doctorate is given. The fulfillment of the research and service requirements attached to this position serve at the same time as fulfillment of the academic requirements for a candidate's doctoral degree.
