At the Department of Civil Engineering in Groundwater Engineering at the University of Manitoba (Canada), the following job vacancy is to be filled within the framework of the NSERC project “Estimation of recharge and nutrient leaching at different scales to improve sustainable land and groundwater management�:

1 PhD candidate in remote sensing / digital image analysis
(starting data 1st May or 1st September 2017)

The research aims to develop new methods for improving sustainable land and groundwater management through advancement of existing numerical models and flexible coupling of those models. The new Ph.D. candidate will work in a team with another Ph.D. and two M.Sc. students. The specific research to be carried out will contain laboratory and field experiments to identify the pattern and kinetics of nitrate leaching under thawing conditions. A numerical part of the research will follow the completion of the laboratory experiments and will use the identified pattern and kinetics of nitrate leaching and the physically based method of numerical modeling of nitrate leaching.

We search for a person with substantiated knowledge in nutrient leaching and willingness for laboratory and fieldwork. Good programming abilities (e.g. Python, Matlab) and profound mathematical skills are required. The capability of becoming acquainted with a new topic including the use of new software packages expected.
We offer a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative and friendly team that is well connected to national and international programs. Appointment will be initially for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension, depending on availability of funds.

Qualification for this position is the completed academic studies with a M.Sc. degree in the area of Engineering, Geoscience, or Soil Science (or comparable).
